Prevalence of Borrelia infection in ticks from wildlife in south-west England

Abstract

Borrelia species DNA was identified in 31 of 75 ticks examined (41 per cent). Twenty-three Borrelia - positive ticks (16 I hexagonus and seven I canisuga) were recovered from the five badgers, five Borrelia positive I hexagonus were recovered from four of the eight hedgehogs, two Borrelia positive I canisuga were recovered from the fox and one Borrelia- positive I ricinus was recovered from the roe deer.
